Following up on the radio rip I posted of the DJ Premier/Luda cut from ‘Cris’ new album, here’s DJ Preem and Ludacris in the studio goofin’ around with a beat and Premo talks about where he’d rate Ludacris in comparison to his favorite MCs of all time.
But you know me, it’s here because it’s Premo footage in the studio. Videos of beat makin’ (pause?) + Legendary producer = Mark’s approval.
In one of my Weezy of the Week columns back when I was writing at UGHH, I said that we were in a golden age of Wayne and Weezy of the Week, and now I feel like the ending of that era is upon us. Not because Wayne’s done anything different, but he’s a superstar now. The non-hip-hop following public looks to Weezy as the face of rap (deserved or not), and nothing I can write about here is really news to anyone.
I don’t break Weezy stories anymore (not that I ever did), but before he was the cross-over hit he is now, he was that Louisiana rapper we all loved, or loved to hate. He was also the king of the mixtape circuit for god knows how long.
That’s where this fits in. The Dedication 3, the end-all-be-all of mixtapes that DJ Drama and Weezy have been cookin’ up forever, is upon us. I don’t know if I’ll hear this everywhere I go- from the suburbs of Scottsdale, AZ to the bodegas in East NY- but if I do, I’ll feel like Weezy of the Week did one last service in helping bring it to the masses.
(Props to illRoots for a good download link with the full mixtape)
B.o.B. just dropped this mixtape, which features some songs you’ve seen here before (I’ll Be in the Sky, Generation Lost), and a bunch of other good tracks. The man’s got a few mixtapes out now, and still no album. If the stuff making it on his mixtapes is being left off his album, then his LP tracks must be really good.
It looks like DJ Premier was recruited for a cut on Ludacris’ new album Theater of the Mind. The version that’s out now is a radio rip, but I’m feelin’ it so far. I like collabos people don’t expect. Sometimes they work out, sometimes they don’t, but Luda definitely has the charisma to go in over a Premo beat.
That’s right, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana and the Skull Gang are teaming up with Mike Epps to release A Tribute to Bad Santa. You could call this a sequel to A Dipset Christmas. The Christmas album will feature “15 Christmas bangers” (their words), along with four skits, starring the group and guests like Freekey Zekey. It’s dropping on Koch November 25, online and in stores.
Hit the jump for the track-listing and a preview of the wavy Christmas album with Mike Epps in the studio.
By now you’ve probably heard Lupe is retiring after his next album, LupEND, which will be a three disc set. Above is what appears to be a freestyle at a recent show Lupe did, which I guess should serve as a preview of what’s to come.
I’m kinda curious why Lupe wants to retire. It’s rare for a someone, especially a rapper, to realize they will not be relevant or in the limelight forever. If Lupe is retiring for that reason, I give him credit for not letting hubris let him rap into the retirement homes. However, don’t you think Lupe has more in him than that? He’s a guy to me that could be next in line to get on that super-star status of Kanye West or Lil Wayne. At the very least, I could see him going a little longer than he apparently wants to.
The Roots, come March 2009, will retire from touring, according to the video above (which is working sometimes and not others- my apologies). They’re going to become the house band for Jimmy Fallon’s show when he takes over NBC’s Late Night, when Conan O’Brien moves into Jay Leno’s spot.
If you haven’t seen them live, get on that. It’s definitely one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. I’m sure the retirement won’t be in effect forever, but for a band that toured as much as The Roots, this is some news.
